Oğuz Atak worked as a bartender at She Baradlı, a restaurant located in Kuruçeşme, Istanbul. He had a tattoo of the word "Allah" written in Arabic script on his back.
The tattoo was captured in footage taken during a police raid, and the incident quickly garnered widespread attention. The attack became the focus of public debate.

On the morning of May 5, 1997, while walking his dog in Bebek Park, he was fatally shot by two assailants. The attackers were apprehended shortly afterward and brought to justice. During the trial, the defendants received heavy prison sentences for "intentional homicide."

One of the perpetrators was sentenced to aggravated imprisonment, while the other defendant received a long prison sentence. During the trial, it was concluded that the incident was planned and that the defendants acted together.
